HELICA Cementless Hip System
Volker Hach
The HELICA-Endoprosthesis is a newly developed cementless hip prosthesis
for dogs. The acetabular cup and the stem are made of a bio-compatible,
osteoconductive titanium alloy and have self-cutting threads. Both the
femoral stem and acetabular component of the prosthesis are initially
screwed into position following bony preparation. Ingrowth of bone into
the prosthesis subsequently follows. The prostheses comes in five standard
sizes. All different sizes of stems, cups and heads can be combined with
each other. The results of more than 70 dogs operated on using the HELICA-Endoprosthesis
are very good. Follow-up radiographs were taken 6 weeks, 6 months and
1 year after surgery. The follow-up time is as long as 3,5 years. The
main advantage of the HELICA-Endoprosthesis is the relatively easy surgical
technique and short surgery time. Also revisions have been less complicated
in the few cases in which it was necessary.
